Fitness Friday: Fuel Your Workout With The Rainbow

Eating a diet full of colorful fruits and vegetables has it benefits especially when combined with exercise! Let’s dive into the rainbow to better fuel your workout. 

 

Red

Strawberries, raspberries, tomatoes, cherries

Berries contain complex carbohydrates. When these fruits are eaten for a pre-workout, they can assist in providing proper glucose levels for energy during exercise. When berries are eaten for a post-workout, they can replenish energy. Moreover, the antioxidants found in berries can assist in muscle repair as well as fight off chronic disease.

 

Orange

Carrots, nectarines, peaches, oranges

Carrots are full of fiber which can support a well-rounded meal plan, making you feel full longer. A diet containing sufficient amounts of fiber can support weight management and weight loss.

 

 

 

 

Yellow

Corn, bananas, pineapple, lemon

Bananas are well known in the exercise world for their high mineral content of potassium. The mineral helps regulate blood pressure, fluid and electrolyte balance and muscle contractions. Potassium is also said to help prevent stroke and support a healthy nervous system.

 

Green

Kale, avocados, apples, peas

Just like other fruits and vegetables, apples have fiber and complex carbohydrates which can be the perfect addition to fuel your workout. Furthermore, the fruit contains fructose which is the sugar made naturally within the apple. Simple carbohydrates like fructose are an excellent source of quick energy before exercise.

 

 

 

 

Blue

Blueberries, prunes, eggplants

Blueberries contain an antioxidant called anthocyanins which gives the fruit its vivid deep purple pigment. This antioxidant has been shown to reduce inflammation in the body which is one of the underlying causes of various chronic disease.when inflammation is low, exercise can be more enjoyable and pain levels are often less severe.

 

Purple

Grapes, cabbage, radish, plum

Purple Cabbage is rich in vitamin K and C. Vitamin K supportS healthy bone density which can make intense workouts with heavier weights or greater impact less harmful to the body. Vitamin C supports a strong immune system keeping you well for your workouts and even promotes collagen production which is critical for the health of the joints during and post exercises.
