Cocoa + Black Beans = Black Bean Brownies!
So, I know exactly what you are thinking: black bean brownies? No thanks. Well, I say give it a try because I promise it looks and tastes just like any other brownie. Moist and all! I would not lie. Food is my life, and I too was skeptical of this recipe, but I gave into making it and am happy I did. I think you will be also.
I mean, who doesn’t want a treat that has added fiber and protein (thanks to the black beans) in it? Plus, it is free of nuts, dairy and gluten! By adding beans and taking out dairy, nuts and wheat, it can still taste delicious!
With the Spring holidays and more outdoor activities around the corner, what a great time to elect to bring homemade brownies to a party. For some reason, I always tend to think of brownies as a spring dessert. Can’t explain that…but I digress.
I feel there are many people with nut, dairy and gluten allergies and buying sweets without these foods in them can be expensive, tasteless or filled with excessive processed ingredients leaving you with an uneaten box of tasteless and hard cookies. Yes, I am talking from experience. Maybe that is why I was tempted to make this recipe. That and the fact that is easy to make, uses simple ingredients and it really is a good brownie!

Black Bean Brownie Recipe
Servings: 9-12 | Recipe adapted from Super Healthy Kids
- 1 spray – cooking spray (olive oil)
- 15 ounce – black beans, canned
- 3 large – egg
- 3 tablespoons – olive oil
- 1/2 cup – cocoa powder, unsweetened
- 1/4 teaspoons – salt
- 3 teaspoons – vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon – baking powder
- 1/3 cup – honey
- Powdered sugar and or fresh fruit like raspberries (optional)
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Spray an 8×8 square baking dish with cooking spray.
- Combine the rinsed and drained black beans, eggs, oil, cocoa powder, salt, vanilla extract, baking powder and sweetener in a blender; blend until smooth.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
- Bake in the preheated oven until the top is dry and the edges start to pull away from the sides of the pan, about 25- 30 minutes.
- Dust cooked brownie with powdered sugar if you’d like or mash up raspberries and spoon on top brownies once they have cooled.
