While we just came off the final weekend of spring, here in the Southeast we have had unseasonably high temperatures that feel more like those of mid-summer. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, especially in the middle of the day, you’ll be craving a thirst quencher in no time.
Wondering how much water you should drink? Aim for half of your body weight in ounces of water or unsweetened beverages. As a Registered Dietitian, I am always preaching the merits of choosing unsweetened beverages, like water, seltzer, or unsweetened tea. Don’t have a palette for plain water or unsweetened tea yet? You can spritz up the water and tea with fruit or even herbs like mint or basil if you want some additional flavor. Have you ever tried making sun tea? This is a great activity for the kids to get involved in, especially as you’re potentially still on lockdown and looking for activities around the house.
- Put 4 tea bags into a clean 2-quart glass container, or 8 tea bags into a gallon glass container.
- Fill with water and cap.
- Place outside where the sunlight can strike the container for about 4 to 5 hours (you may need to move the container to keep it in the sun.)
- When the tea has reached its desired strength, remove from sun and put it in the refrigerator, keeping teabags in.
I usually make sun tea with various forms of white or herbal tea, but use any to your liking or taste preference. Get fancy with some lemon, a few sprigs of fresh mint, or whatever suits your taste buds. Serve over ice, and enjoy your sun tea within 2 days.
