Green Smoothies for St. Patrick’s Day

Juicing and green smoothies are a couple of the fastest ways to infuse yourself with nutrients and are also a perfect meal on the go. But if you’re like me, it isn’t always easy being green. I’ve made plenty of juices and smoothies that sounded great and ended up, well, not so great. Here are my tried-and-true tips for making a great green smoothie!

 

If you’re using a blender, put in the liquid first, and then add the greens with the smallest items first and working up to the chunkier pieces. This gives your blender blades room to move.

 

Resist the temptation to put it on high-speed and work it’s magic. Start slow to break up big pieces, and then pulse to avoid clogging it up. Work your way up for a smoother texture to your smoothie.

 

Add avocado for non-dairy creaminess. I discovered when making baby food a few years ago that avocado and banana are a great combination, and still make it today! If your smoothie is too creamy or thick, add ice cubes to thin it out.

 

Stick to a ratio of 60% fruit and 40% greens for a sweeter smoothie, and gradually work your way towards reversing that ratio for a real power-punch of vegetables!

And now, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, a green smoothie I like to call the Lucky Leprechaun.

  • ½ medium avocado
  • ¼ cup coconut milk
  • ¼ cup fresh baby spinach
  • ¼ cup fresh mint
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (I like Vega brand for an extra dose of veggies)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • ½ of a banana
  • ½ cup of water and ice cubes if desired
