Among the most popular New Year’s Resolutions from 2017 and 2018 are:
Financial: save more money
Weight loss: become more active
Dietary: eat healthier
Self care: get more sleep, quit smoking, etc
Self-development: Read more, pick up a new hobby, etc.

Let’s take a look at the final one, the self care resolution!
Know what self care looks like
Self care varies person to person because everyone has different needs. An easy way to make sure you are taking action to care for yourself is to make a list of healthy ways you can do this. For example, you may write things like: exercise three days a week for at least 45 minutes, social time with friends every other weekend, family hike once a month, go to bed by 9pm Monday through Friday, date night with spouse once a month, get a massage once a month, journal at least twice a week, etc. Your list can guide your goals for the balance you seek in life, work and self care.
Take baby steps
Just like everyone has different needs, everyone is also at different levels of readiness for change (AND THAT IS OK). Self care DOES NOT come natural to everyone, so sometimes you may find that you are not ready to take action yet. Working with a Wellview Health coach who is trained to ask you the right questions at the right time is the perfect way to determine where you are and what steps to get you ready for action over time.
Remember your worth
Occasional self care is simply not enough. In fact, there’s a term for it. It’s called self-neglect. Let me ask you this: would you intentionally neglect your spouse, best friend, child, parent, etc.? I’m fairly confident that I know your answer. So know that you are not your optimal self for those you love if you do not take time to care for the most important person, YOU.
Make compromises not concessions
I see this A LOT. Let’s says you normally go to the gym after work Monday, Wednesday and Friday as part of your self care regimen. Wednesday your child is now home sick and in need of your attention. Your child in this scenario is likely your priority, and that is fine. Take care of little Johnny then plug in a workout dvd at home and get in a little exercise. Obstacles do not have to be roadblocks. So do not give up on your goals just because something through you off.
Take time regularly
You do not eat healthily once a week and claim you are a healthy eater, do you? Routine is key to the success of most healthy habits. Schedule daily or weekly time for self care and keep it part of your regular routine.
