Part Three: The Research/Conclusion
A decline in employee health is a clear sign of an off kilter work-life balance. Conversely, in a study published in 2010 researchers found that flexible working conditions “were found to improve health (including blood pressure, tiredness, mental health, and sleep quality) and/or well-being (co‐workers’ social support and sense of community).”
Moreover, the need for work from home options is as equally important to employers as it is to employees. Giving employees an option to work from home increases their attendance, loyalty, and happiness. It decreases company cost for office space, supplies, and even utilities, while also decreasing employee cost in time and the expense to commute. If this is not an option all the time, many companies have opted to allow employees to work from home a few days a week and provide shared office space for required in-office hours.
Of course, having the ability to set your own work schedule, opt for early or partial retirement, or set a balance of working remotely and in the office is not always an option, so employers should seek alternative actions in order to place value on employee work-life balance.
What else can positively impact employee health and work-life balance?
According to an analysis of various studies published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, researchers found that on-site and off-site wellness initiatives, both fitness and comprehensive, had a positive impact on employee absenteeism and job satisfaction.
