Flip Self-Depreciation To Self-Love

Why is it that we are often our own worst critic? That we second guess ourselves, insult ourselves on our physical appearance or intelligence, and struggle to see the amazing qualities that we each possess? We always try to build those up who are near and dear to us, and defend them if anyone dare speak an ill word, but we don’t feel the same love for ourselves. Why?


Above all, our bodies often get picked on the most. “I’m fat.” “I wish I looked like her/him.” “I’m not strong enough.” The list could go on and on. Sadly, the media can play a large role in this picture by sending the message that we have to have perfectly clear skin, be a certain size, stay looking as young as possible, etc. etc. etc. But the good news is, we don’t have to listen! There are so many other attributes, aside from physical appearance alone, that make us so incredibly beautiful and individualistic.

Every single person is uniquely and beautifully made, all full of diverse characteristics, physically, mentally, and emotionally. This make us different from anyone else in the world. I say that we embrace our differences and be proud of the unique qualities that make us who we are.

I put together a list of challenges for you to try to begin switching your mindset (if you struggle with your own self-love) !

 

1. Make a list of 5-10 things you love about yourself, whether it is physical appearance, skills that you have, your personality, etc., and tape it to your desk or fridge as a reminder.

 

2. Write a letter to your former self, as a child, and tell them all the things that they will accomplish in their future and why you are proud of them.

  • Examples: graduated high school/college, bought your own home, created a family, discovered a passion, learned to play an instrument, stood up for yourself, grew stronger through a difficult situation, etc

 

3. Do something for yourself. It doesn’t have to be big; just a gesture to thank yourself for all that you do in a day’s work. Maybe get a massage, see a movie you’ve been wanting to see, go for ice cream, take a trip, read a book. Whatever it is that would be a little treat for yourself.

 

4. Ask a loved one what their favorite characteristic is about you. People often see us differently than we see ourselves and it just might shock you, in a good way, what they say!

 

5. Take a long look in the mirror. With regards to body image, rather than focus on a part you may not like, focus on parts and attributes that you do like. Maybe you like your hair because it is like your mom’s, or your strong legs because they carry you each day, or your laugh because it always cheers other up to hear it, or your laugh lines because you’ve led a happy life. Find something, and build on it each day. You will be surprised how you will begin to see the positives.

 

6. Learn to say NO. Saying “no” doesn’t make you mean or selfish. If in the time and space, it is appropriate to say no to something, that person will understand and you won’t add stress to your life.

 

7. Tell yourself something positive. Do this every morning. Maybe it’s that you’re proud of how you handled a situation or that you tried a new recipe the night before.
